One of America's leading sociologists, James Davidson Hunter is also a devout Christian. Fr Edgar says that his concern that the church regain a calling to be a faithful presence in all areas of life, and that we recognize the limits of political power in affecting cultural change was a real challenge and inspiration, and that he is looking forward to pushing more deeply into Dr Hunter's ideas, carrying the conversation further, and exploring what it would look like to see the vision for "faithful presence" take root in our life at Apostles.

Fr Edgar claims that, more than any other, this book shapes the way we are trying to do church at Apostles. The author, (the Revd) Paul Zaul, is a personal friend and hero in the faith of Fr Edgar and other members of the Apostles family. (Hear Fr Zahl speak on his book.)

Simon Chan--an Assemblies of God pastor who holds his PhD from Cambridge--argues that the historic liturgy of the church is necessary to counteract the prevailing pragmatic, subjective understanding of the church and worship which afflicts evangelical churches today. If you want an "Apostles 201" look at the nature of liturgy, this book is for you. It is academic, but very readable.

At the heart of this book are two important insights: first, we are what we desire; and second, worship forms us as disciples. This is a great book. Everyone should read it. Dr Smith will someday soon be a Discipleship Weekend speaker.
