NEVER SILENT due out July 14 - Home

Bp Thad Barnum's story of the founding of the AMiA—to be released on July 14—is a must read...

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8.32). With two specific qualities—a gift for expository preaching and a passion for evangelizing lost souls for Christ, Bishop Barnum has been appointed by God to tell the unique story of the Third World missionaries’ battle for the soul of the American church. As a gifted expository preacher, Bp Barnum took great care to measure every story of the movement against the truth as revealed in the Bible. Thus he weaved through the webs of documents and events
to give us the true picture behind the war of propaganda and publicity. With the passion of an evangelist, Bp Barnum fixes his eyes on Jesus as he tells the real story of the power of the gospel to convict hearts and convert souls. In the midst of the crisis of faith and the collapse of spiritual leadership in the church today, Bp Barnum sees that this is the only way to save the church in America. Through personal experiences of two servants of God from Rwanda, Bp John Rucyahana and Abp Emmanuel Kolini, the horror of the genocide in Rwanda is linked clearly to the spiritual genocide in America. How could anyone keep silent when the souls of our people are being ushered into hell for eternal death? My prayer for everyone who reads this book is that you too “will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) ended today, 29 June. The Conference issued this final statement calling for a clear, focused, biblical Anglicanism. The conference challenged the ineffectual leadership of the Archbishop of Canterbury and called the Instruments of Unity to task for their failure to deal effectively with the crisis initiated by the Episcopal Church (USA) and the Anglican Church of Canada.

Praise the LORD!
It is good to sing praises to our God; for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel. (Psalm 147:1-2)

Though we offer various events for women throughout the year, Women's Bible Study is really the heartbeat of Ministry to Women. Our goal is to become students of God's Word and through our study, gain a greater understanding of God. Learn to understand and apply God's Word and develop meaningful relationships with other women as we study the Bible together.

This Fall, Jan Kaneft will be teaching "Clinging to the Roots of Bitterness". Jan is offering the class both mornings and evenings and dates will be announced shortly.

Epiphany - Life@Apostles Archive

Epiphany falls on January 6, and is the climax of the Advent/Christmas Season. It means "to show," "to make known," "to reveal, " as it remembers the coming of the wise men bringing gifts to visit the Christ child, who by so doing "reveal" Jesus to the world as Lord and King. In traditional Christian churches Christmas, as well as Easter, is celebrated as a period of time, a season of the church year, rather than just a day. The Season of Christmas begins with the First Sunday of Advent, marked by expectation and anticipation, and concludes with Epiphany, which looks ahead to the mission of the church to the world in light of the Nativity.

Dear Friends,
I would like to thank you very much for your welcoming me... I was very pleased indeed for such hospitality you gave me and the money collected for Solar Light for Africa. Please extend my gratitude to all the members of your church who gave generously for the work of our project. I do pray that God continues supporting you in His great church through many challenges these days. May the one we all serve bless all that you do for Him.
Yours Sincerely,
(the Rt Revd) William Rukirande

Church of the Apostles joyfully welcomed (the Rt Rvd) William Rukirande of Uganda as our preacher on Sunday, 7 May 2006. Bishop Rukirande has experienced oppression and persecution while serving as a bishop in the second-largest Anglican community in Africa, the Church of Uganda. He has also been involved in the reconciliation efforts in Rwanda, in the aftermath of genocide. He is now retired, but helps to lead the Solar Light for Africa project. Please join us in lifting up Bishop William in prayer.

Mark Galli, senior managing editor of Christianity Today magazine (and speaker at an Apostles' Discipleship Weekend, December 2006), has been active in the Anglican tradition for 20 years. Beyond Smells & Bells discusses how liturgy powerfully shapes us toward Christ-likeness as we participate week after week.

Beth Moore's study, Stepping Up: A Journey Through the Psalms of Ascent, is an in-depth look at 15 Psalms. Just as a song or poem can express feelings of fear, doubt, hope, and joy, these 15 psalms model how study participants can voice their own petitions and praises to our God.

Homeless Ministry Mission Statement - Homeless Ministry

And if you spend yourself in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. Isaiah 58:10

Who are we?

We are just a group of college students (6-8) who have a heart for the lost and broken.

Who do we work with?

Specifically... A man named in his 40s named Billy. He has a welcoming smile, a good heart, and is darn good at backgammon. His leg was run over by a car 5 months ago and he has not been able to work since. Every night he tries to get comfortable as he settles in on the porch of an abandoned house.

A woman in her late 50s named Sandy. She is friendly, loves to talk, and gives great hugs. She has heart palpitations and can only travel short distances. She was in and out of professional medical care throughout last semester.

John is a man in his 50s. He is highly intelligent and very reliable. He loves to discuss religion and philosophy. He is an ex-convict and cannot get a full time job. He works temporarily at USC picking up trash. These are just a few of the friends we have made this semester...

Who are the "Chronically Homeless?"

There are over 2,000 homeless men, women, and children in the Columbia area. 30% of this homeless population is chronically homeless. These "chronically homeless" are the homeless you are most likely to see on the streets. They are the population of the homeless that have no real desire to better their lives. Due to addictions, mental disability, or mental slavery, these people are the hardest to work with, but need the most help. There are usually 20-30 people who we minister directly to each week.

What do we do?

We have an ongoing ministry working with the chronically homeless population in Finlay Park. We provide meals, books, information regarding shelters, and clothes for the men and women. Following the meal we spend a couple of hours talking with the people, continuing to build relationships that we have been forming for half a year now. We often spend time praying with those who would like to be prayed over.

Where?

Our main focus has been on Finlay Park because the people are so accessible. When our group reaches over 10, we plan to expand and accommodate Five Points as well.

    When?

We go out on Monday nights at 5:30. We meet and pray before heading out to talk to any homeless people we see. We also occasionally schedule one on one time with some of the people with whom we've developed a relationship. Usually this involves meeting for lunch or to play chess, backgammon, or checkers. (For meeting place, contact Dan Wolf.)

Why?

Because we see it everyday. You cannot walk down the streets of Columbia for more than 5 minutes without meeting a man or woman in need. It is time to do something about it.

How can I help???

First of all, pray for our ministry. We are constantly striving to be Christ in the lives of the people we see, to maintain the right perspective in our ministry, and to let the people know that there IS hope in Christ. Secondly, we invite anyone to come down with us on Thursday nights. Thirdly, we need FOOD! These people need good, nutritious home cooked meals as much as we do. Anyone who is willing to cook for 10-20 mouths for Thursday night can help. We are willing to drive to wherever you live to pick the food up. Sign up on the sheet below for a certain week or call us and we will be in contact. No time to cook? You can designate money for the homeless ministry, which we can then use to purchase food, or you can donate any of the following needed items: portable food: apples, oranges, Ramen noodles (except shrimp flavored due to shellfish allergies),spaghetti sauce/noodles, energy bars, cookies, bread drinks: fruit juice, bottled water, Gatorade mix toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, washcloths reading material, especially large print Bibles men's and women's clothes, socks, shoes, and undergarments.

You can bring these items to church on Sunday and drop them in the box marked "Homeless Ministry" or call or email us to come pick them up. Any help is much appreciated!

Welcome

Welcome! Thanks for taking an interest in COTA Youth--the youth ministry here at Church of the Apostles (COTA for short). This page expresses our vision for youth ministry. It explains the purposes that we are working toward and the programs that we hope will get us there. Some of the programs you will read about below are still in the formative stage. Feel free to contact me--Dan Wolf, Director of Youth Ministries--with any questions you might have. Use the link at the bottom of this page to send me an email. Again, Welcome!

Our Foundation

COTA Youth exists to

equip young believers; and with them to
embrace our neighbors,
express the gospel, and
enjoy God and each other.

This four-part purpose comes from two particular passages of scripture-the "great commandment" and the "great commission." The great commandment comes from Matthew 22:37-40, in which Jesus says, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." The second passage from which our purposes come, the Great Commission, reads, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:19-20). These two passages highlight the elements of the Christian faith that are most important to our ministry._____

We exist to...

EQUIP young believers

WHY: In the Greek, the main verb in the Great Commission is the command "make disciples". Everything else in those verses hinges on that. The same is true of our youth ministry. Our purpose "to equip young believers" is directed at helping students mature as disciples.

HOW: So how do we equip young believers? We use two particular programs to address this purpose: Sunday School and Small Groups. Our Sunday School curriculum is a six-year cycle that focuses on the Word of God. Each year a different aspect of the Bible is addressed, such as Old Testament examples of character or New Testament teachings on community. While a variety of tools are used, such as DVD dramas, quizzes, games, and worksheets, the Bible is the core of every lesson. We believe that nothing can accomplish our purpose of equipping young believers like meeting God in his Word. For that reason, our other program for equipping young believers--Small Groups--also focuses on the Bible. However, while Sunday School takes a more chronological approach to Bible study, Small Groups are topically aimed. Small Groups are single-gender and meet every other week, working their way through a particular book. Feel free to ask us what books our small groups are currently studying.

WHO: The driving force behind these programs is the team of volunteer leaders in the youth ministry at Church of the Apostles. For information on becoming a Sunday School Teacher (or substitute), or a Small-Group Leader, please contact me.

We exist to...

EMBRACE our neighbors

WHY: Christ tells us to "love your neighbor as yourself," and that's what "embracing" is all about. When we embrace our neighbors, we reach out to them. We aim to embrace neighbors of proximity (our church's surrounding community) and neighbors in need (primarily physical need).

HOW: We embrace our neighbors of proximity through periodic local outreach, such as working with Homeworks downtown or raking leaves for people who need help. We embrace neighbors in need through two annual mission trips--one for middle school students and one for high school students. Our middle school mission trip is through Mission Columbia Project, a joint effort among several churches from the Mission Columbia network. This is an opportunity for middle school students to do real ministry in a wide variety of settings, including nursing homes, sports camps, character camp, home renovation for the elderly, and being a camp counselor for younger children. The high school mission trip is a cross-cultural experience, aimed at helping those in particular physical need while exposing our youth to an experience that will reshape the way they see God, others, and themselves.

WHO: We welcome adults to assist us with embracing our neighbors by helping to organize events or joining us on them.

We exist to...

EXPRESS the gospel

WHY: Jesus calls us to bring people to a knowledge of him, and his call to love God and our neighbor finds its culmination in this action. It is out of our love for God and for people that we obey Jesus' assignment of spreading the news of salvation. The word "express" rightly suggests more than simply speaking the gospel. We aim to express the gospel through many venues, from an evangelistic message to simple hospitality. For many of us, expressing the gospel can be a new or intimidating challenge; so as a ministry, we desire to be especially strategic in equipping our youth in this area. Our hope is that it will become a way of life for them that flows from a personal relationship with Christ as well as from practice, training, and mentorship.

HOW: Currently, our programming in the arena of expressing the gospel is tied to our Small Groups. In these groups, students learn about evangelism alongside each other and under the direction of one or two Small Group leaders. On an individual basis and under the guidance of their Small Group leader, students who consider themselves ready are mentored as they endeavor to express the gospel to their friends. We also are aiming to begin hosting an event every summer that will be specifically evangelistic in nature, providing our students with an organized opportunity to express the gospel.

WHO: If you are interested in being a Small Group leader or in helping us coordinate an evangelistic summer event, please let me know!

We exist to...

ENJOY God and each other

WHY: It is so important that youth enjoy God. We believe that it is essential to the longevity of their commitment to Him and to their ability even to love Him. How can we love God with all that we are if we do not enjoy Him? Likewise, it is important that we provide our youth with the opportunity to enjoy each other, as this teaches them to love the church and to appreciate the bond we have as children of God.

HOW: So how do we enjoy God and each other? By working fun into everything we do. It's that important to us! But there are two major events each year that are designed primarily for this purpose: the Fall Retreat and the Spring Conference. The Fall Retreat is a getaway to welcome the new students and adult leaders, to build memories, and to enjoy simply being together and belonging to God. The Spring Conference varies. In addition to these two events, fun get-togethers throughout the year are typical.

WHO: Consider joining us by helping to coordinate or host events.

Thanks again for taking the time to learn about COTA Youth! I hope you are inspired to join us as we join God in his work among students. If so, please ask me how you can get involved. I look forward to growing alongside you!

Peace of Christ,

Dan Wolf, Director of Youth Ministries

Excerpts from our first letter:

I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
My name is Rev. NSENGIYUMVA Theophile. I'm the Parish priest of
Rwamagana Parish, Kibungo Diocese, Episcopal Church of Rwanda.
Myself, my family, and my Church were very happy to know that
you want to have a brother-sister relationship with us. May God Almighty
bless you. Our Church Rwamagana is an old Parish which started in 1964, and it
has now 7 local Churches. It is not easy now to tell you all the
details about our Parish, I think I'll soon [mail] you the details... Concerning Rwamagana town, it is a small town of about 45,000 but
which is growing very fast. That's where our Parish is placed. Rwamagana
is in Eastern part of Rwanda and the office head-quarters of Eastern
province of Rwanda are in Rwamagana. It is a nice place for tourism but
other details will be also sent [in the mailing].
Concerning my life, I'm a man of 34 years old with a wife, KARAMBE
Aimable and she is 27 old, we have one son, NSHUTI Clever; he is 1year
and 10 months old. We have also other 2 children Monique and Clementine
whom we care for because they are orphans. My wife is a student in
secondary school. The family challenge we have is the low lever of life because our
salary is around $50.00 per month and it is the only source of income we
have but God provides.
Concerning my education, I finished the first degree in theology
and I wish to advance my studies if God allows. I'm interested in
communication and development skills. Most of all I like preaching the good news of Jesus.
I will send other details.
Greet the family and the Church for us.
God bless you. Theophile Nsengiyumva

Missions Group - Missions

The Missions Small Group meets monthly for study of scripture, prayer and discussion on how we, as the body of Christ, can reach out to those in our community, nationally and world wide. With the name of Church of the Apostles, we have a great challenge to live up to what that means. We are to go out in the world and share the gospel and be Christ's representatives. The members of this group have great passion for many organizations. Through prayer we are trying to seek the Lord's will for the small group and for the church as a whole.

Currently, Church of the Apostles is supporting the following ministries:

If you are interested in joining us for meetings, please contact Rich Richardson at 739-2867 for more information. Meetings are also posted on the online calendar.

Matthew 9:37-38 states, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest fields".

"The major focus of our team's ministry is to train, encourage, and equip Kenyan pastors who are church planters. To do this, each year our World Harvest Mission (WHM) Team in Kenya teaches a quarterly seminar called, The Church Planter Training Program (CPTP). It was developed for WHM by our team leader, Dr. Robert Carr. In addition to classroom teaching, we spend time with pastors in small groups and in each of their churches. Our goal is to help pastors understand and apply biblical teaching to their own lives and congregations."

From www.kairosofsc.org

KAIROS is an ecumenical Christian ministry designed for use in state and federal men’s and women’s correctional institutions in the United States and throughout the world. This ministry is governed by the National Board of Kairos Prison Ministry, Inc. with headquarters in Winter Park, Florida.
KAIROS is conducted, in cooperation with the chaplains and wardens of correctional institutions, by teams of laity and clergy who are qualified by their experiences in Christian renewal programs. Team members are selected, trained, and certified by area governing bodies of KAIROS and approved by correctional institutions as citizen volunteers.
The purpose of KAIROS is to establish a strong Christian community among the residents of correctional institutions. This is done by the presentation of a 3-Day short course in Christianity. It is offered by an interdenominational team of about 55 persons for a group of 42 residents. The chaplain carefully selects the inmates from the prison population. The ideal recruits are those residents who are presently the leaders in the institution. There, they become Christ’s agents for change in their environment which ultimately can bring about change in the attitude and quality of life for the entire institution.
The primary goal of the KAIROS ministry is to teach those who attend the weekend to become part of a share and prayer group. This allows them to share their lives on a deep spiritual level and pray for one-another. Many times, the members of these groups find their peers who have not been through KAIROS program coming to them and saying, “I don’t know what it is you’ve got, but I want it!”. . . and then they introduce their friend to Christ.

From www.samaritanspurse.org

Mission Statement: Samaritan's Purse is a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan's Purse has helped meet needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God's love through His Son, Jesus Christ. The organization serves the Church worldwide to promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God’s love. This program of Samaritan’s Purse provides an opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in a simple, hands-on missions project while focusing on the true meaning of Christmas—Jesus Christ, God’s greatest gift. Along with shoe box gifts, millions of children are given Gospel booklets in their own language. Last year, we collected over 7.6 million shoe box gifts worldwide and distributed them to children in 95 countries.
