In the vein on our recent Discipleship Weekend with Andy Crouch on Creating Culture (see audio for talks listed here), we introduce to you Tom Conlon, a native of New York who has been enchanting audiences across the country with a distinct blend of rich poetic lyricism, driving, elegant guitar work and an intensely personal delivery. Since his debut album in 1996 "Soil Out of Sand" to his most recent project "8 Roads Home" featuring covers of traditional Hymns in solo acoustic guitar and voice, Tom continues to tour, connecting in venues often as intimate as someone’s home.

Secondly Epiphany holds up for us the call of discipleship—both to be and to make disciples.

The iconic figures of Epiphany are the Magi. They represent the nations, or gentiles (that’s us!), sojourning to Christ. Those who were far off have drawn near at last to worship. And, just as the Magi made their pilgrimage and brought their gifts at great cost, so we rescind our lives to follow after him. Like the Magi, we put action to our faith; and like the Magi, we do it freely and joyfully. No one required it of them. They came in response to an affection and desire that was fully resident in their hearts.

Christmas has stirred this same affection in our hearts as well. It has reminded us of the goodness of a God who is both gentle and strong. It has left us wanting to act on this joy, wanting to respond to it. That response is Epiphany.

Epiphany recognizes that the incarnation, and even the resurrection, is not the end. It is the beginning. It is the beginning of Christ calling us into abundant life, starting here and now. Epiphany calls us onward into growth. It urges us to learn from his teaching and to live as his tangible presence to those around us.
—Fr Aaron Burt

Christmas morning the Chapel of Christ the King at Fort Jackson held a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service for soldiers in training who were unable to go home for the holidays. For the past several years Church of the Apostles has been participating in this service in various ways: as musicians, readers, chalice bearers, or just by attending the service. Afterwards they continue to minister to the soldiers though fellowship and encouragement over lunch which is provided almost exclusively by the willing hands of CotA parishioners.

Though all soldiers have the option of going home, many are unable to pay for their transportation, particularly the international soldiers, who cannot hope to see their families for several months; others choose not to because, sadly, they find they don’t have a home worth going to. For these soldiers, the outside participation can be truly significant.

It is such a ministry to these soldiers that someone would bake cookies, show up on Christmas Day and give them a hug.
